David Mark May 'Resign Seat' As APC Takes Senate

There are strong indications that Senate President David Mark is considering the option of resigning his seat for the 8th Senate following The result of the March 28 National Assembly Elections which saw the All Progressive Congress (APC) wiining majority of seats thus making the PDP official opposition party from June 4th.

The Senate President only just secured a successful reelection ‎to represent Benue South senatorial district in the National Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to become the majority party in the Senate, Senator Mark’s calculations as returning as  head of the upper chambers has hit the rocks.

By convention and tradition ‎of the Senate, it’s president and deputy are elected from the majority party by a two-thirds majority of members of the upper chamber.

The consecutive two- time Senate President ‎is not even assured of a minority leadership position in the Senate assuming he considers vying for a leadership role thereby leaving him with the option of being a committee chairman at best.

This gloomy picture is what according to insiders close to Senator Mark is making the Otukpo-born politician, develop cold feet in returning to the Senate for what would be a record fifth time as an ordinary member after being the Senate President in the last two laps of the National Assembly.

Besides, Senator Mark lately courted the ire of opposition lawmakers in his recent ruling especially with respect to the clearance of Musiliu Obanikoro as a minister in spite of stiff opposition from all senators from his state. APC senators walked out of the session and alleged breach of the rules by Senator Mark.

Going back to the Senate without the cover of being a presiding officer is what inside sources say is unpalatable prospect for Mark whom some sources say may be called upon to champion efforts to rebuild the PDP that has just suffered a heavy defeat by the APC in the presidential and national assembly elections conducted throughout the country on March 28th, 2015.
