The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has described the planned airport project by Governor Ayodele Fayose, as a drain pipe.
The governor, on September 16, set up a five-man committee headed by Mr.Kunle Osho to ensure the take off of the project within the next few weeks. The project, according to the governor, will be executed on a 6,000 hectares of land.
A statement by Publicity Secretary of the APC, Taiwo Olatunbosun, described the airport project as a misplaced priority and accused the governor of abandoning infrastructural development of the state to pursue projects that would benefit only a few.
The statement said: “Of what economic sense and use is an airport to Ekiti, when the Akure airport is less than one hour’s drive to Ado Ekiti? What has been the impact of the Akure airport on the economy of Ondo State, which has hundreds of big industries compared to Ekiti with none?”
The party described as wicked and insensitive what he called the promotion of elite project while neglecting initiatives for the growth of local economy for the masses of the agrarian state.
The APC also kicked against some community leaders, especially traditional rulers who have pledged support for the project, saying they did so for selfish reasons.
“The Ekiti airport project estimated to cost a whopping N17 billion is the most economically unviable project at this period considering how Fayose daily laments that the state has no money. To even think about such a needless and wasteful project has shown Fayose as very insensitive to the plight of the common man in Ekiti.
“A governor that prefers an airport that risks lack of patronage to infrastructural development that will be beneficial to the people is a governor that doesn’t care about the welfare of his people”, he said.
APC spokesman also berated the governor for the recent introduction of development and other levies in the state, describing them as “anti-people” policies that will further impoverish residents of the state.
