Nigeria is no doubt the largest producer of cassava in the world, producing million MT of cassava in a year. Cassava is grown in commercial quantity in 34 out of the 36 states of Nigeria.

Economic Importance of Cassava
1. Source of Food and carbohydrate (Boiled, Garri, fufu, Akpu, chips, snacks etc)
2. Cassava is used as starch for shirts and other garments.
3. Cassava is used for animal feed as it provides a lot of calories to animals.
4. Cassava root has been promoted as a treatment for bladder and prostate cancer.
5. Cassava starch extracted can be used by food industry, paper and textile industry as well as an adhesive in glass, mineral wool and clay.
6. It produces ethanol, which can be mixed with petrol or used on its own as a transport fuel.

Harvesting
Cassava is harvested by hand by raising the lower part of the stem and pulling the roots out of the ground, then removing them from the base of the plant. The upper parts of the stems with the leaves are plucked off before harvest. Cassava is propagated by cutting the stem into sections of approximately 15 cm, these being planted prior to the wet season.

Because of its enormous potentials and bye products extracted from it, cassava production has a very large market in Nigeria. As an investor, you may choose to go into direct cultivation of cassava for the purpose of export, or choose to invest in the production of one of its bye products.
